Multilingual Animal Names Are Easy Dictionary Attack Targets

oktober 27, 2026 •

Animal names feel personal and easy to remember, which is exactly what makes them risky as passwords. A word from a less common language can look obscure, but attackers do not need to understand a word to use it against you. Public vocabulary resources and crossword tools make animal terms in several languages simple to collect and test.

How dictionary attacks work

A dictionary attack does not start with your personal details. It starts with a prepared file of words, names, phrases and common variants, then tests each one against a password check. If your password is exactly one of those entries, the attacker’s first pass may already be enough. The danger grows when the wordlist includes more than one language, because a password that is not in an English list can still be in a Danish, German or Spanish list. In practice, an attacker does not need to know which language you speak; they only need your chosen word to appear somewhere in the file.

Public word lists are everywhere

The Oxford English Dictionary describes itself as an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history and usage of over 500,000 words and phrases. Cambridge English Dictionary offers free word lists and quizzes to create, download and share. Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries provides topic dictionaries, including Animals and Health, with CEFR levels. None of these resources is secret, and none needs to be hacked; they are designed to make words easy to find. When a word is easy to find for a learner, it is also easy to find for an attacker.

A Danish-language crossword helper such as DyrKrydsord works the same way from an attacker’s point of view. It returns 1,131 animal-name suggestions across different word lengths, from very short insect and fish names to longer mammal entries. A solver uses the list to fill a missing word; an attacker can use the same list to guess passwords. The list is public by design, so it can serve both purposes without any breach. The helper also lets visitors filter by known letters and returns animal names sorted by word length, so an attacker can build a structured list without speaking Danish. Categories such as mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and insects appear next to the suggestions.

Why animal names fail quickly

A single dictionary word is weak not because it is short, but because it is already known. If an animal term appears in a crossword list or a topic dictionary, it has already been collected in a form that an automated tool can read. Common substitutions such as replacing the letter a with @ do not solve the problem; attackers’ wordlists routinely include those transformations. Precise cracking times vary with hardware and the password storage method, but a word that is already on a list should not be treated as strong at any speed. The risk is structural: every entry in a public wordlist is a guess that has already been prepared.

Passphrases that avoid the trap

Do not use a single animal name in any language, a pet’s name, a favourite animal, or any word that appears in a public vocabulary resource. A stronger choice is a passphrase made of unrelated random words, or a long random string generated by a password manager. Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it is offered, so that even a correct guess cannot by itself unlock the account. If you prefer a memorable phrase, check that none of the words could appear in a dictionary or a crossword solver. Applying a personal substitution to an animal name is not enough; the underlying word remains in the list.

Conclusie

Multilingual animal names feel personal, but public vocabulary tools turn that feeling into a liability. When a word is already in a searchable list, it is already a guess. Use random, non-dictionary passphrases and treat every publicly listed word as off-limits.
