How to verify a download with a hash
Reputable vendors publish a hash (a checksum) next to their downloads so you can confirm the file you received is exactly the one they shipped. The steps: download the file, generate its hash with the tool above, then compare it character for character to the value on the vendor’s own page. If they match, the file was not altered or corrupted. If they do not, delete it and download again from the official source.
One caveat that matters: only trust a hash published on the vendor’s own website, not one printed on the same third-party page that offered the download. This is a key step in learning to tell if a software is real or fake.
MD5 or SHA-256: which should you use?
- SHA-256 is the right default when the vendor offers it. It is collision-resistant and suitable as a security check.
- MD5 is fine as a quick “did this file change?” integrity check, but it is broken for security purposes and should never be your only guarantee.

FAQ
What does it mean if the hashes do not match?
It means the file is not identical to what the vendor published. It may be corrupted in transit or tampered with. Do not run it. Delete it and download again from the official source.
Is MD5 safe to rely on?
Only as a basic integrity check. MD5 is not collision-resistant, so it should not be used as a security guarantee. Prefer SHA-256 whenever it is available.
