Cyber Security Consulting Services

By Security Briefing · Published and sources checked

Cyber security consulting is a defined project: an outside expert helps you decide what to do, then hands the plan to someone who will carry it out. A good consultancy leaves you with decisions and owners, not only a document.

A reader scenario: the second office

Illustrative scenario

A 60-person company opens a second office

This company is invented. Its IT grew informally, a large customer has started asking security questions, and leaders want to know what to fix first. No one internally owns security, and nothing is known to be wrong yet. That makes it a planning problem, which is what consulting services suit.

How the project runs

  1. Define the problemAgree on the decision: for example, what to fund in the next 12 months. Name the person who will own the result.
  2. DiscoveryThe consultant reviews systems, accounts, and suppliers, and interviews staff. Discovery isn't a technical test unless you scope one.
  3. RecommendationsFindings are ranked by business risk. Many consultants organize this around NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, a voluntary framework.
  4. HandoffA walkthrough with the people doing the work, including owners, rough effort, and what to do first.

What you should receive

Sample deliverables

What a finished engagement usually includes

  • A short summary for leadership: the decision needed and why
  • A current-state summary of systems, accounts, and suppliers reviewed
  • A ranked list of recommendations, each with an owner and effort estimate
  • A 12-month roadmap the company can run without the consultant
  • A list of what was not reviewed, so no one assumes it was

Checklist: reviewing a statement of work

  • Does it state the question being answered, not only the activities?
  • Are systems, locations, and suppliers in scope named, and exclusions listed?
  • Who from your team must be available, and for how many hours?
  • Are deliverables listed by name, with a review and revision round?
  • Is pricing fixed or hourly, with a stated cap and change process?
  • Who owns the documents, and how is your data returned or deleted?
  • Will the named people do the work, and are subcontractors disclosed?
  • Does anyone recommending fixes also stand to sell them? Ask for that to be disclosed.
