What unarmed officers typically do

  • Entry control

Check IDs, sign in visitors, and manage deliveries.

  • Observation

Rounds, camera watch, and spotting safety problems.

  • Reporting

Daily logs and written incident reports.

  • Escalation

Calling police, EMS, and your contact, in the agreed order.

Coverage checklist

  • Overnight shifts: How do you confirm the officer is awake and on post?
  • Replacement staffing: If someone calls out at 10 p.m., who covers, and how fast?
  • Supervisor contact: Who do we call, and do they visit the site?
  • Training: What is site-specific, beyond the state minimum?
  • Turnover: Will we get the same officers?

Compare on the same terms

Ask for hours, posts, and supervision in writing. Some sites may be better served by scheduled patrol visits than a full-time post. If a state requires a guard credential, it usually applies to unarmed officers too; our explainer on the security guard card gives background.
